Old rose fragrance
David Austin's favorite rose fragrance is the classic old rose, probably the most beautiful and haunting of all the rose fragrances. The following roses have some of the most interesting strong, complex and well-balanced old rose scents. Click on the pictures for more information about these varieties or to buy them as bare root roses.
Gertrude Jekyll
Gertrude Jekyll has the quintessential old rose fragrance: strong, rich and perfectly balanced. The gorgeous little scrolled buds open into large, deep pink blooms which have the most beautiful, rounded old rose fragrance of all the English Roses.

This rose is named after the talented and passionate Victorian plantswoman who did a great deal to popularise the use of roses within mixed borders, recognising their potential to provide impact and color when combined with herbaceous perennials.

We are delighted that Gertude Jekyll was recently voted England's favourite rose by BBC TV viewers.

Brother Cadfael
A rich old bourbon rose fragrance. The fragrance is most intense in warmer weather conditions.
Charles Rennie Mackintosh
Exceptionally free flowering. A light old rose fragrance with hints of lilac and almond blossom.
Falstaff is one of our best crimsons with a wonderful rich old rose scent.

Harlow Carr
The ideal of English Rose gem-like beauty. Exceptionally vigorous and healthy, with masses of small but perfect rose-pink blooms each with a strong old rose fragrance.

Noble Antony
A glorious old rose perfume with an oaky character like well-matured red wine. This rose has beautiful deep maroon stems and lasts well when cut for flower arrangements.
The Countryman
This close relative of Gertrude Jekyll, is an excellent, healthy shrub. Its delicious old rose fragrance has a fresh strawberry character.
William Shakespeare 2000
William Shakespeare 2000 is our customer's favourite rose season after season.

This wonderful shrub rose has the strong, warm old rose fragrance one hopes for, but does not always find, in rich velvet-crimson roses.

The superb blooms have a traditional quartered form to match the classic fragrance. This is perhaps the most romantic garden rose we have bred to date.
