Michael Marriott
Michael Marriott has worked with David Austin Roses for over 25 years. During this time he has designed private rose gardens and prestigious public gardens in many different countries.

His own garden is run on organic principles and has never been sprayed over the last 22 years. Selecting only the most healthy varieties of roses, he uses companion plants to attract beneficial insects.

Michael is a great believer in the basic, common-sense principles of gardening. These include using mycorrhizal fungi, enriching the soil, watering, mulching and fertilizing well.

He is frequently asked for advice on pruning and feels there is far too much emphasis placed on the mystique of pruning. In practice, this is so simple that it would be very hard to go wrong when pruning the tough and versatile English Roses.

Detailed advice on pruning
This private walled garden in England was designed by Michael Marriott. Michael will be very happy to work on any sized project from a small rose border to a large rose garden.

As this service is always very popular with our customers, we are grateful for as much notice as possible. This is especially important if you are contemplating a large scale rose garden.
Designing Your Own Rose Garden or Border
While it can be a little challenging, designing your own rose garden or drawing up a planting scheme can be hugely rewarding.

A rose border can be a simple rectangle or a more irregular shape, a single or double border. To draw up a planting scheme, start with an accurate, scale drawing, on squared paper, of the area. 1cm to 1m works very well. Decide on overall strategies, for example, color scheme, height of plants, mixed with perennials or purely roses, repeat flowering or not.

Make a list of varieties you would like to include, complete with color and dimensions. Remember the dimensions we quote for each variety are guides and that many roses can be encouraged to grow larger or smaller by judicious pruning.

The next step is to experiment by filling in the area on the squared paper, bearing in mind the recommended spacing. Always remember it is more effective to plant in big, bold groups. Time spent planning is always rewarded in future years, so you may like to create several alternative plans before deciding on the final version.

If you would like us to cast an eye over your scheme we will be very happy to do so.

We pride ourselves on our excellent customer service team who will be very pleased to answer any queries regarding roses, be it variety choice for specific positions, how to prune or any other cultural problems. They can be reached on 800 328 8893 Monday to Friday.
