Climate Information

Some important information regarding your climate zone

All our roses are shipped bare-rooted starting in late January going through to May in the coldest areas. Bare-root roses are very tough and travel very well.

To ensure maximum survival rate of newly planted roses please place your orders as early as possible in the year so that they can be planted before the hot weather sets in. Once the day temperature regularly reaches 70° F your young rose bush may well struggle to survive. Rose bushes can be successfully established during hotter weather but they will need extra care and attention and will be shipped at your own risk and so not covered by our guarantee. Please read the planting instructions on our Rose Cultivation page (click here).

Many people ask us about the relative hardiness of the various varieties within the States. Unless otherwise described all varieties should be hardy to Zone 5, the hardier ones definitely to Zone 4. Those listed as being more tender, like the Teas eg. General Schablikine, will be hardy only to Zone 6 or 7. All our roses are budded onto Dr Huey, the most widely used rootstock in the States. Burying the bud union by a few inches or planting them at an angle will improve survival chances in the coldest areas.
