Across the year, you'll find two different forms of David Austin^® rose available. For much of the year, our potted roses are ready and waiting,  cut back and dormant during the cooler months, in leaf and growth through the warmer ones. Then, once the growing season draws to a close, our bare root roses come into their own, dug fresh from the field and sent out while fully dormant, just as English roses have been grown and shared for generations.

Bare root roses arrive simply, as stems and roots, quietly waiting for the garden to bring them to life. With care, they can transform into lush, flowering plants, filling a garden with colour, fragrance, and presence. Affordable, easy to handle, and a traditional favourite among gardeners, they offer both charm and reward.

Roses are wonderfully resilient, and sometimes a change of position is all that is needed to help one flourish. Perhaps a border is being redesigned, a rose would benefit from more sunshine, or a much-loved plant simply needs a little more room.

Rambling Roses have a natural affinity with trees. Their long, vigorous stems can be encouraged upwards into the branches, where they gradually weave through the canopy and open their flowers amongst the leaves. As the rose matures, the effect becomes increasingly natural, with great trusses of bloom appearing high above the ground and tumbling softly from the branches..

It is perfectly possible to grow beautiful, healthy roses without routinely using chemical sprays. The key is to concentrate on the health of the rose and the garden around it, rather than trying to prevent every aphid, marked leaf or other sign of nature.

By the height of summer, many repeat flowering roses will already have given a wonderful display, with some moving through their second flush of flowers. As blooms begin to fade, a little thoughtful care can help keep plants looking their best and encourage further flowers to follow.

Tiny, elusive and surprisingly hungry, spider mites are one of the most common pests to appear on roses during warm, dry weather. Although they're difficult to spot, the damage they leave behind is much easier to recognise. Fortunately, once you know what to look for, they're straightforward to manage, especially when caught early.

There is a distinct, bittersweet ache that every gardener knows. It happens the moment you zip up your suitcase, step out the front door, and cast a final glance at your garden. In the height of summer, our roses are often reaching their breathtaking peak. It feels almost cruel to leave them behind just as they are putting on their finest show.

There is nothing quite like the sudden panic of walking out to your garden coffee in hand and noticing your prized rose bush looks completely washed out. One day it is a picture of lush green health, and the next, a scattering of bright yellow leaves makes it look like autumn arrived early. If you are staring at your plants right now wondering what went wrong, take a deep breath.

Summers no longer behave as they once did. The balance of sun and rain that shaped our gardens for generations is slipping, replaced by longer dry spells and more intense heat. The soil hardens, moisture disappears quickly, and even the most established plants begin to show signs of stress. Roses, for all their grace and vigour, are no exception. But while the weather is changing, so too can we adapt our approach, caring for our plants with greater awareness and intention.

There is an undeniable allure to a rose bush at the peak of its summer display. Yet, as individual blossoms fade, they do more than just disrupt the visual harmony of your garden. Left untouched, a spent flower signals to the plant that its reproductive work is complete. The rose then shifts its energy away from flower production and into developing seed pods, known as rose hips.

As the warmer months arrive, ensuring your roses remain well-hydrated is the most effective way to maintain their health and vitality. Regular watering supports the plant’s natural resilience, allowing for a consistent and beautiful display of flowers throughout the summer.
